Story of the day

Sent them to Mexico. Never made the trip.

Wales vs Scotland · Ninian Park · On this day, 1985

Cardiff, 10 September 1985. Scotland needed a draw to reach a World Cup play-off; Mark Hughes had put Wales ahead. With nine minutes left, Davie Cooper buried a penalty low past Neville Southall. Moments before the final whistle, Jock Stein — the first British manager to win the European Cup — collapsed by the dugout. He died in the Ninian Park treatment room, aged 62. His 43-year-old assistant took Scotland to Mexico instead: Alex Ferguson.
